The basic concept of Ambient Occlusion is to shade the model in such a way as to accentuate the nooks and crannies of your model. Ambient Occlusion basically means what areas of your model are hidden from ambient light in the scene. In other words, which portions of your model are slightly shadowed. This output option is very useful for use with texture baking.
